Feng-Shui for Beginners

Feng Shui is used to create harmony within the home or office. Traditionally, the word "feng" means wind and "shui" means water. In the Chinese culture, good feng shui means harmony and good fortune. The building characteristics branch of feng shui (the second is the landform classification) looks at how energy flows within a structure, in this case your home, and how the energy affects those within the structure. Unless you are versed in the elements of feng shui; it is suggested to hire a feng shui consultant. This person will have knowledge of the different energies in a room and the proper spacing needed to create a harmonious, positive atmosphere.

For those who are interested in trying it on their own, it is suggested that you first identify the space ailments in a room. These are areas of negative, draining space, a place that drains you of energy or money. This will be known to you by focusing on how you feel in this area, is it a place that comforts or aggravates? It can be easy to turn negative energy into positive energy; such as placing a plant or mirror in the negative area. Next you will want to add positive energy to the space which again can be as simple as adding small touches that add comfort such as an aromatic candle, white lace or a soft cushion.

Lastly, you will take in the entire room; get a feel for what it projects when you walk in. Is it inviting, or alleviate stress? If so, you have created a positive feng shui; if not you must try something new. It is important that every item used has its own space, furniture is placed with a purpose; once completed all the pieces should compliment each other, creating comfort and harmony.

Feng shui may sound complicated, in some instances it is. Creating a room however is not difficult if you follow your energy and the energy of the room, creating a space that brings comfort. Feng shui is a practice that takes practice; the more you work towards your goal of a positive feng shui, the easier it will be to obtain. For best results without a consultant, visit the library or local bookstore and internet sites for more information and guidance on creating your home’s perfect feng shui.

Casual Style

There are many different styles to choose from when decorating a room. One of the most traditional styles is the casual style. This style does not aim to create perfect symmetry and has textured pieces with simple details. The casual style will have furniture and decor with soft curves or rectangular shapes.

The casual style allows for a lot of imagination; looking at items that are not normally considered furniture and changing then into a piece of furniture. One example would be using old wooden crates, stacked on top of each other for an end table. Furniture in the casual style also tends to be chunky and on the shorter side. Depending on your preferences, you could use wicker, iron or rattan furniture.   Casual style can be used to enhance other styles such as a country or rustic look. The casual style furniture is usually overstuffed and has layers, such as with a loveseat, which would have a slip cover and a quilt draped over the back. The color choices vary between neutral or pastels and dark solid colors. Fabrics used for the casual style are not shiny, but textured with natural fabrics that bring out the other colors in the room. Try contrasting different colored fabrics in the room and add little extras such as buttons or ribbon.   The best parts about the casual style are the various choices of furniture, colors and fabrics. Unlike many other styles, the casual style allows you to mix different types of furniture and various colors together to create a unique look for your room.

The Contemporary Style: Be Bold

If you are shy and like to blend into the crowd, then the contemporary style is not for you. To pull off the contemporary style you must be bold and have an eye for the new and exciting. The best structures for the contemporary style are lofts, offices, stores and modern homes.

The contemporary look is clean and focuses on lines and simplicity. The choice of colors for the contemporary style is fairly basic; you want to use neutrals, black and white; and incorporate bright, bold colors. For lofts or studios that have pipes exposed or other characteristics such as broken bricks; use them as an artistic focal point by accentuating them with bold colored paint. The saying "less is more" comes into play with contemporary design; sparse furniture and wall space in essential. Make each furniture piece stand out on its own. Use items of geometric shapes and add color with bright colored cushions.

The contemporary style is not for the shy; you must embrace the new and have an artistic eye for pieces that really express who you are. Remember, what other people may see as the room’s flaws will be its assets; make those flaws bold and beautiful!

Formal Style for the Informal Home

As a child, I remember my mother barring my brothers and I from the living room with the exception of holidays; even then we had to sit on towels. The living room was my mother’s formal room, the room she designed with elegance. Our home was modest, and for the most part had a country theme; which made the living room stand out that much more. Whether you live in a grand house or a modest house, you can create a formal room or even a formal home. If however, you have children, I suggest sticking to just a room (at least until they leave for college!).

The formal room is one in which has perfect symmetry, and a main focal point. If you are making the dining room a formal room, than the focal point would be an extravagant table and chandelier. An area rug brings out the elegance of a room rather than a wall-to-wall carpet. Oriental or Persian rugs make are a nice choice. Another key to creating the formal room is that wall hangings are hung in exact pairs and are situated across the room from each other at the same point. Furniture such as side tables should be in pairs as well. Dark stain, such as cherry should be used for the trimming and furniture and you should add very simple but elegant lamps. Don’t add anything that is not necessary, this room is not a room for knick knacks. Preferably, the formal room would have a high ceiling. Large windows are also perfect for the formal room with long, simple neutral colored curtains with tasseled ties.

Formal style is unlike other styles because there are very specific guidelines for the traditional formal room. It is the perfect style for those who entertain guests often, or host large holiday parties. What's nice about the formal style room is that it can be a part of almost any home, with rooms of various styles and sizes.

What is Your Style?

Everyone is unique, with a style all their own. The problem is figuring out what that style is. What furniture draws your attention? Do you like to sink into a big, overstuffed chair or are you more comfortable on a straight-lined couch with cushions. Do you enjoy the comfort of knick knacks? Or do you have a less-is-more mentality? Your home should be a welcoming sight when coming home from a hard day; so it is worth the time it takes to add comfort to your home with your favorite style. Decorating magazines are a great help in discovering your style. There are many decorating magazines on the market and picking up a variety of them will help you get more exposure to various styles. Pick up an inexpensive loose leaf binder with pockets for collecting pictures and articles that peak your interest Search online for decorating websites and write down the ones that are informative and add this to your binder.

Next comes the fun part, trying out furniture. Take a day to travel, check out different furniture stores, trying out different styles of furniture. But don't limit yourself, flea markets and tag sales have hidden treasures that can spark your creativity. If you’re good with your hands, try finding pieces that might need a little TLC which you can turn into your own masterpiece. Once you pick your pieces, choose your favorite colors. Taking a look at your binder and selected pieces will give you an idea of your perfect room. Once your furniture and colors are in place, you’re ready to add the extras; candles, curtains, knick knacks or whatever will make your room perfect.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Psychologists use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - DSM-IV and similar diagnostic manuals to diagnose patients with personality disorders such as Narcissism. By understanding the criteria of diagnoses, you can better understand what to look for in a person whom you may feel has a narcissistic personality. The basic criteria for diagnosis of narcissism looks at the characteristics of abnormal behavior such as an inflated self-esteem, the patient believes he is superior and has special abilities. This person makes himself out to be an overachiever, and extremely talented (Criteria 1). This person is also delusional with fantasies of being able to achieve anything such as love, money, power etc (2). The uniqueness of this person, as he sees it, requires that he is in the position to associate only with other elite and powerful people (3).  Narcissists also feel that they are entitled to the best of the best; he should get special treatment and others should comply with their demands (5) and embellish him with admiration (4). A patient will also, according to the DSM IV, demonstrate a lack of empathy, envy and arrogance and will take advantage of others for his own gain (6-9).  The nine criteria discussed above illustrate what to look for in a narcissistic individual. This may help you understand the actions of your friend or relative and may help you find treatment for either yourself or friend. Narcissism hurts not only the patient but the people who love him and it is important that everyone involved can understand his actions in order to find the next step in helping this person get treatment for his disorder.

Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI)

The Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) is the most common psychological test used to diagnose narcissism in patients. According to recent research, NPI scores are higher today than in past generations. The original NPI was based on the DSM-III (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) and consisted of a forty item checklist of symptoms. Over the years however, many psychologist have found that only a few symptoms are regularly found in narcissism patients. The NPI is flawed in that it only measures normal to moderate narcissism and diagnosis for the severe narcissism is often overlooked. While research has uncovered more accurate measures of diagnosis; the psychiatric profession will often times use the NPI for final diagnosis. The number of factors used to diagnose have drastically changed from forty to around three or four reported factors. This means that the NPI is only detecting a few reoccurring factors of narcissism. The NPI has resulted in psychologists being able to conclude the potential actions of a narcissist. According to reoccurring NPI results, researchers have found that narcissists are more likely to play games in a relationship, including mind games, cheating and other devious acts and they will value themselves over others. They also value material possessions and are obsessed with their own image.

While research has shown the NPI to have major flaws, its results have been consistent in terms of character identification and diagnosis of mild to moderate narcissism. In recent years, psychologists have creating new diagnosis methods for testing patients for narcissism. The newer tests, while not perfected have demonstrated the potential for more accurate diagnosis.

A Background of Narcissism The term narcissism was created by Sigmund Freud who based this term on the Greek legend Narcissus. Narcissus was known in Thespiae and Boetia (Greek Mythology) for his amazing beauty. There are many stories telling who Narcissus was; the older versions of the myth state that he was punished by the Gods for his vanity; because he attempted to seduce a young man, when in reality it was his own reflection in a pool. The various myths all demonstrate characteristics of narcissism. Vanity, disregard for others and a self-absorbed demeanor are all characteristics of the myth and the personality disorder.  The personality disorder, narcissism, is a term used by psychologists to explain certain symptoms of abnormal thought and behavior. While everyone can be considered to have some narcissistic traits, a true narcissist has severe self-centered characteristics that disregard the well-being of others in order to benefit himself. A narcissistic person will have a harder time achieving a productive, happy life because nothing is good enough for this person and people are never willing to give this person enough attention.  It has been found that teens and young adults can acquire narcissism (Acquired Situational Narcissism). Conventional narcissism develops during childhood whereas ASN develops later in life and is brought on by the "celebrity-obsessed society". ANS patients feel they are better than everyone else because society, the media or fans tell them they are. Another newer form of narcissism involves gender roles. This is developed throughout a childhood which either over valuates or devaluates the person's gender, causing this person to act out because of misinterpreted gender roles. There are varying degrees and classifications of narcissism, but the results are the same; the person becomes self-obsessed, doing whatever he or she wants, hurting anyone he/she wants in order to achieve personal satisfaction.

Windows Server Release Date Delayed

Originally due for release at the end of 2007, the latest Windows Server 2008 will not be ready for shipment until February 27, 2008. This upgraded version has been in the works for five years, and apparently needs a few more months of tinkering. Organizations using the updated software will experience more user friendly programming. Security enhancement tools will be available to system administrators and more flexibility will enhance user experience.

Top enhancements for federal agencies include higher security and remote access. A new feature is called network access protection (NAP); NAP will check each individual computer that logs into the network and then makes the decision whether or not computer should be allowed onto the network. NAP will check all computers attempting to log onto the network; wireless, virtual private network or cable. NAP will check the computer's details such as if it has a firewall, anti-spyware and antivirus software, if the software is up-to-date, if not, the computer is denied access or NAP fixes components that are unfit. NAP will guarantee that employees or clients will not be able to infect the network either by accident or purposefully.

Remote access services are greatly improved in the 2008 Windows Server edition. Most agencies are looking for greater flexibility and access “in computer services as they grapple with issues of teleworking and continuity of operations”; according to Joab Jackson of GCN.com. The newest version allows retrieval of data through log in/password option from anywhere; for users who are outside the network. Users outside the network do not need a virtual private network in order to access data with the new features of remote access. This feature allows a client residing on a “user’s computer that, when clicked, can bring up the entire desktop of another computer in a window”; as he’s on the other computer entirely. The users desktop is fully accessible even file directories, application links and the start button.

In order for all this to happen, access must be granted by the system administrator; he or she can choose to grant full remote access or access to a chosen program(s). While not the only new features, NAP and remote access were found to be the most needed and wanted features for the Windows Server 2008 within large organizations. Other features include virtualization, read-only domain controllers and server cores.

Prominent Christian in Palestine Killed

Rami Khader Ayyad, 32, was found murdered on October 7th after his abduction from his home in Gaza, Palestine the previous day. Ayyad was the director of Gaza’s only Christian bookstore. He was found on a Gaza street with a gun shot wound to the head as well as numerous stab wounds. Ayyad was the victim of anti-Christian violence; he had been receiving death threats regularly before his murder by Palestinians who were angered by Ayyad’s missionary work.

Six months previous to Ayyad’s murder, the Christian bookstore he managed, Teacher’s Bookshop, was bombed. Authorities speculate that bombing was done by Muslim extremists. Sunday’s memorial service for Ayyad was filled with mourning Muslims and Christians alike; many of which fear that the murder was motivated by anti-Christian hatred. Christians have approached Hamas (Islamic Resistance Movement) and asked for “greater efforts to [to be made to] protect Christians in light of the instability and lawlessness in Gaza following the Islamic group’s takeover”. Before Hamas took over, Christians were respected and considered part of the elitist group. Christians were appointed to top government positions by the late Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat. Today, Muslim-Christian relations are straining as attacks on Christians continue.

There are considerably more Muslims than Christians in Gaza, 1.5 million to 3,000 respectably. Hamas insists that relationships between the two are still strong and that the relationship will not falter even with the growing violence against Christians. Gaza’s Christians however, are doubtful. Many of Gaza’s citizens, both Muslims and Christians, did however pay their respects to Rami Khader Ayyad’s family on Sunday.

Support to Split Jerusalem

Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, and senior Israeli officials are in support of dividing the holy city of Jerusalem. Revealed on October 8, 2007 the plan would separate the city by giving Palestinian control of Arab portions of the city. East Jerusalem will be the future capital of a Palestinian independent state; according to Palestinians.

The majority of Israelis believe “that the Jewish state must give up the outlying areas of Jerusalem, where tens of thousands of Palestinians live, in order to preserve a Jewish majority in the city”; according to CBNNews.com. There are areas in dispute however; Israelis are not willing to transfer ownership of the Old City, which is the location of the holiest site in Judaism, the Temple Mount, as well as the third holiest site in Islam, the Al Aqsa mosque compound. There are suggestions to allow international presence for oversight of the holy grounds. As of now, no agreements have been made. As to be expected, not all Israelis are in agreement to hand any part of Jerusalem to the control of the Palestinians. Likud party chairman Binyamin Netanyahu warns that Jerusalem will become a pilgrimage site for terrorists from around the world should any part of Jerusalem be turned over to Palestinian rule. He feels that if the land is turned over, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will place Hamas (Islamic Resistance Movement) men on Jerusalem’s walls which will have negative consequences.

Monday’s private negotiations between Palestinian and Israeli negotiators involved an outline for a plan for peace between both parties. If the negotiations go through, the potential for the Hamas militant group to gain strength is very high, should these negotiations not be kept; which would be disastrous for Jerusalem

Two Sides of Christian China

The ongoing debate in China continues over the most effective way to distribute Bibles. It boils down to two things, legal or illegal distribution. To an outsider, it may seem crazy that people are arguing over illegally smuggling Bibles into China, as if it were drugs. Taking a closer look at the situation however and you will understand the reasons behind the arguments.

China has been quite hostile towards Christians and any teaching of, or distribution of, the Bible. The two sides of the argument is this:

1.     The Chinese government is not keeping up with the deal to distribute Bibles and promote religious freedom.

2.     The Chinese government has worked with missionaries effectively to promote Christianity and distribute Bibles.

These arguments are drastically opposite from one another. On one hand you have Christians saying the government in China is ineffective and therefore we must smuggle Bibles into China is order to fulfill the need of bringing the Bible to those who need it. On the other hand, you have Christians saying the government is working with them to distribute Bibles and there is no need to change, or break the law. How can there be such a drastic disagreement? Christians who are unsatisfied with the Chinese government’s efforts believe that the government is hostile towards Christians and that to cooperate with the Chinese government means compromising their Christian principles. In order to help the millions of suffering Chinese, these Christian missionaries believe doing anything and everything, including Bible smuggling, is necessary.

Christians working with the government believe they are making progress, perhaps not as much as their other Christian opponents would like, but still its progress. They believe, that to break the law by smuggling Bibles into China will ultimately cause the Chinese government to be hostile towards Christians, and those receiving the smuggled Bibles; thus creating more barriers to religious freedom in China.

Regardless of what side of the argument you stand on, the fact is that progress is being made with both unofficial house churches and the official Three Self Churches are growing at tremendous rates.

God's Love for His Followers

Today's world is full of emotional and physical pain, and it is so easy to lose our way. It is not until we are hurting so deeply that we cry out to the Lord for healing. Jesus was a healer; is Mathew 5, we see Jesus walking from town to town placing his hands on the sick, making them whole again. "Large crowds followed Him wherever He went-people from Galilee, the Ten Towns, Jerusalem, from all over Judea, and from the east of the Jordan River" (Matthew, 5:25; NLT). The followers’ faiths were so strong that hundreds people traveled far and wide to meet this man called Jesus; the man who could perform miracles.

We all need comfort and healing, are days are filled with stresses that can eat at us unless we open our hearts and pray for comfort. Isaiah 40:11 says; “He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young (NLT)”. The Lord offers his comfort; He protects his children and wants to take your pain away through prayer and faith in Him.

Sometimes we forget that Jesus is still performing miracles everyday; all around us is living proof that He is here. How often do we hear of patients being told they have months to live; only to find years later, they are alive and well due to their strong, impenetrable faith in Jesus? Sometimes healing is not physical but emotional; praying to Jesus to lift our burdens, take the pain or anger from our heart, heals us, bringing us closer to Jesus.

It is true that the world can seem like an evil place; but as followers of Jesus we must continue to serve him by being grateful for the lives we have and praying for healing, just as those in Judea.
